I was tempted to give this map one point because it runs, but that would be being far too generous. This is quite possibly the worst DM map I've ever played. Yes, even worse than DM-RageArena. By far. At least Rage has a little room to move in before you die. Melfunnel_XI consists of a handful of parallel hallways, all of which are scarcely more than 160 UUs wide, making effective evasion virtually impossible. Even though the architecture is simplicity itself, requiring only 22 brushes to create, not one of those brushes is aligned to the grid. Not one. It's almost as if the author tried to employ the most horrible mapping technique possible, but the scary thing is that this map is actually out there being played somewhere. It has mirrors too, used for no reason at all, which is a pet peeve of mine. It reeks of a mapper doing things just because he can, without bothering to wonder if he should.
While trapped in these claustrophobia-inducing hallways, you'll find that every single weapon is in here, along with ammo caches containing about a dozen pickups sitting right next to one another, and eight -- yes, eight -- redeemers. All crammed into a map that's dwarfed by DM-Stalwart. Every pickup is in here as well, if you can live long enough to get them, not that any of them will be of any help. The central area where the hallways meet, which is still too small to move around in, has 18 playerstarts all placed right next to one another, which face outward from the main area to make doubly certain you get shot in the back immediately upon spawning.
To put it succinctly, DM-Melfunnel_XI is to mapping what Battlefield Earth was to film. It's that bad. And you know what the scariest thing of all is? If the map's title is telling the truth, this is the author's eleventh shot at making a map like this, and it still sucks this badly. If it was the author's first map, I would dial the excoriation back a few notches, but after eleven tries, a monkey could produce better work than this. A monkey might even manage better on the first try. (Monkeys are pretty smart.) JonnyMellis should be banned by international law from ever opening UnrealEd again. I pray that he never breeds.

First of all I have to salut Ironblayde for writing all that text (this map is hardly worth the effort) and for hating it so purely and truely.
I am the admin of the server "MELSOFT SMALL FAST CUSTOM MAPS" and I agree that the map sucks but the gameplay on this server is fast, insane and crazy and the players don´t have time or even care if the map is well-built or not.
The point is that there is players on this server -EVERY DAY and I have not had one single mail suggesting a map removal (yet).Anyway I think Ironblaydes comment is great, I´ve printed it and its now decorating the wall in the "server-room"...But I´ll have to warn you JonnyMellis will keep on mapping and eventually upload to NC3... BEWARE :)
EDIT:Why all this hostility? (Really it´s only a game...)If you guys want something new to hate,
check out the "MelsoftMapackCTF" with 9 new maps by JonnyMellis. EDIT2:The answer to "Dark-JaXx" question: Someone (an UT player I guess...) mailed us and suggested we should put out a "map-pack" for

I started to upload the maps 1by 1 to NC3 before I realized it was better to send them all in one zipfile.

If your players are so stupid not to notice the crap map they are plying in, then checkout the Stairway to heaven map posted a few weeks back. Considering the sum total of your combined brain cells (all 42 of em) it will no doubt keep you all happy for decades.

I have a question: why do you put it online if you don't care if it's build right? Most people here gives 1 to 2 points for gameplay, and architecture/lightning/lay-out the other points..
So..visually it sucks, but maybe..maybe it could have something that called gameplay..
But that's old UT style gameplay, and the reason why nobody plays UT anymore..they have play that to much.

not the best melfunnel map by a long chalk, but still playable and fun. Doesn't look too bad either.
some of the comments here reflect a total ability to appreciate other styles of UT - this is a fast a furious UT style, and if you wanna go wandering around maps like this checking out the wall designs, then you're gonna be fried and fast.
if you don't like funnel maps, don't bother to comment - we dont care what you think, we wanna know what people who like funnel maps think.

maps Fordy why comment if you dont play them, i don't like jailbreak but i dont go into the map and insult people. you people dont seem to understand these maps at all, they ain't designed to be pretty cos we don't stand there looking at the walls. as for people saying all the guns and pickups are useless, again thats just cos you don't know how to adjust to these type of maps, they all come in handy if used right more funnel maps on NC please if only to anoy people like fordy, and UT2k4 ones please |

Ok, where to start! Let's start with the lighting.
Lighting is poor, to say the least. Saturation is way over the top and the colours, ranging from yellow to purple, really have no affect on the look of the map.
Well, that's not strictly true. The lighting does have the affect of making the map look, horrible.
Items have been forgotten in this map, so i can't comment on that. Architecture is nothing but wall after wall with the odd intersected brush, to create doorways..no real effort has been taken to make it look at all realistic or pleasing to the eye. The map is surrounded by a tall mesh fence which, if it didn't have a HOM all along its base and the skybox wasn't so poorly aligned, it would look ok-ish.
Game play is very annoying. You do nothing but snag on badly laid brushes and steps in the floor.
Nothing in this map is worth keeping, but i will say that Mel sure has his own style;D

about the gameplay. most of the maps is never even needed cos theres 1 straight route from flag to flag. but i liked the powerful kickers.

Alrighty then... Half point for running, and another two points...
well, just 'cause. To prove that I'm not totally unfair,
I will admit that this map could be ammusing for clans or folks who just want a quick,
crazed match. What you get are a couple of rooms with skyboxes that appear to be from "Face."
You can get between the rooms by jumping through a hole or over some small gaps.
Yeehaw! The absence of weapons or sounds and strange oddities
(like small panels textured with a moving moon and spikes sticking out of walls)
will turn off people looking for a masterpiece map,
and horribly annoying flickering light coupled with unjustifiably low framerates will keep them away.
'Nuff said. Sorry Mel, but I need more to my maps!

Got it, thanks 4 comments...We have a lot 2 learn yet... Changes since the first "edition":
- Dynamic Lights are now off, giving the map much better FPS.(Thanks 2 comments at NC3)
- New textures gives the map a better look. - A couple of "holes" in the walls.
This map is a part of the "MelsoftCTFmappack" and runs on: "MELSOFT Instagib Custom Maps":213.112.167.248:7788.
I hope this is an Improvement from the first map....All comments are welcome good or bad.

Mel! You haven't changed your map-pack's logo! We suggested you remove the guy fingering and the mouths inter-twisting! Such graphic images discourage most to download your maps

Mellinium is set in a medival, "castle" type of textures.There is a lot of alternative "paths" to the flagbases.

To make it worse, you added a mylevel.utx THATS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD, really mel.. learn.
add your textures in the mylevel imbedded in your map, not in a mylevel.utx, melskull or meltex..
becouse you added a mylevel.utx other maps will f*ck up, and the engine will have problems with this.
(not enough to make it crash most of the time)
I advice you to add all of your textures in the mylevel
(you dont have to save the mylevel.utx since its imbedded in the map itself,
but since you dont listen to anybody and still not using any tutorials you still make stupid mistakes) give up or learn.
i waited.. and it seems i waited for nothing...again. again your lighting is washed,
you have a room, it has windows, through those windows you see a skybox,
when you exit the room you walk trough a hallway that leads you on the other side of the window..
so how in hells name can you see the outside trough the window, when there is supposed to be a wall from the hallway....
you got tonz of bsp-holes and hom fx, you just slapped half of your brushes in the map without thinking
(i can tell by the way they are placed (halway trough walls etc)
this map deserves 'the finger'and ignore redfist, we all do.
*cough* we dont pump a lot of maps since we put a lot of time, though, detail and love in our maps*cough*
and we have personal lifes, school, college and work.
also there is something like personal problems.
but since you are probably only fictional you dont know about stuff like that.

I simply must reply to redfist... You want to see the "critical people" pump out some more maps.
Therein lies the problem! Unreal mapping is, unquestionably, a matter of quality over quantity, and quality takes time.
End of story.
Now, for the real stuff...The first word that comes to mind with this level is "clump.
" Why? Because everything seems to have been heavy-handedly mushed together.
To be fair, some of the textures were kind of nice, although often missaligned, and decoration seemed random.
Gameplay became a ten-second capture affair once I found the underground tunnel,
and the previously mentioned window-into-hallway thing is also a problem.
Of course, the utter lack of pickups is a pain as well and the bots had all been dropped on their heads as children.
Sigh, every map deserves a fair judgement, even if the reviewer regrets bothering afterward... :-)

I downloaded this map myself, and I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.
It's true that the textures could use some work,
but considering I still can't figure out how to make decent custom textures myself,
I'm definitely not going to trash anybody else for attempting to make them.
From a conceptual point of view, I really liked some of the architecture,
although when I opened it up in UnrealEd,
I thought it was true what some people have said here that Mel possibly rushed it a bit,
as a number of the brushes overlapped with each other.
I liked the sliding platform things though...
cute little novelty there, and not enough people think out of the box with movers, unfortunately.
The map is also a bit too cramped for my own personal tastes,
but that's only because I tend to prefer fairly large, open air CTF maps...so that's nothing against Mel's execution of this one.
I hope Mel isn't put off by the reception this map got, though...
because even though it might be true that it was a bit rushed,
I liked a number of the ideas I saw here, and so I'd like to see any future maps he puts together.
I give it a 7 for the aesthetics, some of the concepts, and the overall interest factor,
but the texture issues, BSP snags, and small size of the map meant it was really a curiousity only for me...
Not one that I'd actually play on a regular basis, I will admit.
Make it a fair bit larger and fix the BSP problems though, and that would probably change...
I like the existing architecture. I try and look at a map also from an overall perspective, not from any one particular angle.
EDIT: I just went through Mel's map history,
and for those of you paying attention, he *is* improving...
this map is actually quite a radical improvement over his previous work.
There is a definite evolutionary pattern here I think...and if he keeps going, he will eventually become a solid mapper.
Keep trying, Mel...You'll get there.
Download CTF-Warrior if you want an example of the type of CTF map I really like myself.
EDIT: quillion...I guess that's my point...that I don't think this map IS exactly the same as his previous attempts.
I looked at your stuff, which is interesting...some nice brushwork.
With MelCastle though I saw myself why reviewers say that ignoring the grid is a bad thing.

Not to be a bighead or anything, but take a look at my maps from the start.
That is what i call a evolutionary pattern. From total crap to, well half decent.
What most mean here is that he has had DOZENS of good mappers, give very good advice.
Mel seems tobe ignoring it all and just making the same quality tbh and now people have just give up!

I noticed your post account wasn't associated with your author account

I just wanted to say that Jonny's first maps got bashed to death,
they were really bad, but even after some improvements he still gets bashed,
Jonny never flamed if I remember correctly and thus find it sometimes unjustified,

compensates. and if you rate a map 0 cause it comes from another game, BUT totally rebuild by mell, you suck man, all mappers get there inspiration from something they saw someday/where, so they're al thiefs, and every map should be rated zero, pls think before ya rate, this map is worth waaaaay more then those 0's, waaaaay more. |

Truth be told, I have never
played a map by JonnyMellis before. Judging from screenshots and comments (well,
some comments at least) we're talking major league rubbish so I simply
haven't bothered. But finally this never-ceasing controversy has made me curious
enough to download one of Mel's maps and play it.

Map Description:
This is an old DM-map I made a couple of years ago...(it sux but is kinda fun 2 play)
I replaced the old textures with some new ones...(still sux though)
I think it´s better than "Melfunnel-XI" anyway...

Mel has a pretty bad record here. I might try this one in a few,
but it already looks like it could be a lot better, but he struck ambience.
For some reason his map breaths it from a glance.
The lighting is wat does it most, it looks like a ruins setting in a rocky canyon with the sunlight barely reaching it.
But in the screnies you can clearly see a closed up roof.
So, the light is unsourced, but htis could be something really nice and gave me lots of inspiration.
The textures are wel chosen adn add to the ruins temple idea,
but it doesn't all seem aligned greatly nor does the architecture look really stunning,
but the textures do there work wel enough to obscure that for now.
I didn't DL it yet so I won't score either, but it definitly looks like more than a 0. If it opens it's atleast a 0.5.

I'm going to skip issues such as lighting, artwork and creativity and get straight to the meat of the problem.
I counted at least 7 redeemers (they reappear pretty quickly)
a supershock rifle, 2 big ol' kegs of health,
4 sheild belts and enough weapons for someone to defend themselves even in a neighborhood like mine.
all in a couple of small rooms.....yeah. +1 because it opens +1 because it plays (even on my laptop)

I know I messed it....but as I say in the description and "readme-doc"
its old but its fun 2 play :) and it HAS got 2 BE better than "Melfunnel-XI"
( well almost any map is :< but I´ve kept it on NC3 ´cause of all the funny comments... :) )

im going ahead and giving the map a 3. why? because it runs,
and it has custom content, and pillars. now, what i didnt like.....
the map has almost no gameplay value.
there is about 20+ redeemeres scattered around the map.
like 3 super shock rilfe spawns. dude, you should stop making these maps like this,
and try going for something thats more of an arena style map.
and please, in your future releases, dont use redeemers, but if you do, only use one,
and make it really hard to get too so it balances out the gameplay value. but seriously,
you should make an arean type map, one that has different levels for plenty of z-axis fighting.
thats what most people like, because its fun to see somebody below you,
then to jump on them with about 5 rockets. you have alot of potential dude,
but you need to use it to surprise everybody and come out with a kick ass map.
and another thing, leave the monsters out next time also.

come on dude. why dont you take on the arena style DM maps?
instead of just waisting your time making these dumb ones,
why dont you try and make a really good one with awesome gameplay....
and weapons would be nice, just not super weapons like the redeemer.

Come on dude - you're being a little harsh.
The only way to get better at something is to keep at it as many times as it takes to master it.
I'm not a vey good mapper either, but I need the creative outlet.
That's why I still make maps, and this author certainly has their reasons.
Try some constructive critiszm, and point out the good points in a map before you comment on it.
Remember what your parents should have taught you - if you can't say anythng nice don't say anything at all.

HEY Cool you play on time,sounds good man,
you shoulda added ONE more verse-segment to your playing,but it's a kickass game type sounding pick
What I like about this map in a wierd way,is you did good spacing on the trees,
it's fun to strafe it away.
Also I am not a good judge of "CTF" so gameplay will have to goto someone else.
But your getting better map wise,this time it didn't feel so obnoctiouse of a place to fight in,
better colors better looking than all your other maps ,so far.

comments... :) The music actually IS a "wav-file" converted to 2 mono tracks... (it's LIVE except 4 the drums) EDIT: @knull... thx 4 your comment, though this map could never be a 8.5 regardless if the music was the best ever made 4 a game =) (wich it's NOT) ha det bra jävla svenne (he-he) :) @Charon... You're right of course but isn't the music actually a PART of the whole map? |

Map Description:
Another "Funnel-type" of map...I.o.w: no "piece of art".
Some z-axis or vertical action this time, the golden "cogwheel" at the bottom is a "kicker".
For those of you who aren´t familliar with "funnel-maps"
here´s a short description: The typical "funnel" map is often small in size(kb),
all playerstarts are clamped into one small space.
The better weapons are often a distance away and there´s LOTS of them
- escpecially "Redeemers".Gameplay is fast and insane...
The first one to reach the "big guns" is often the winner...
You play 6-10 of these maps on the same amount of time that one
"normal UT-DM-map" would take...
(You can play these kinds of maps at: "Leifis Funnel server" or
"MELSOFT SMALL FAST CUSTOM maps"just look in the games serverbrowser.)
